January, looking forward to spring

January is for dreaming of spring and I do mean dreaming as in sleeping like a hibernating bear! After all the hustle of the holiday seasons we deserve a good rest just like the little seeds in the earth.

With the cold grey days of winter in the northern hemisphere where I am, I'm drawn to gardening catalogs full of color and the images of lush life full of possibilities. Now is the time to begin planning for the gardening season. Questions need to be addressed like; how much space do I have for a garden and what do I want to grow? Even if you live in a tiny apartment you can grow food in containers.

Not many things in life is as liberating as being able to provide food for yourself that you grow instead of buying it from the grocery store. You get to control and decide the quality of nutrition you give to yourself and the people you love.

Of course a few containers on a patio are not going to provide food independence, but it's a great place to start getting experience and some reward of fresh fruit, herbs and veggies in your diet.

What about picking some spinach and kale from your patio container garden for making a green smoothie ? It doesn't get any fresher than that! You decide if you want to use non-GMO seeds or transplants and go organic.

Here is a simple green smoothie recipe:

2 - cups fresh spinach

1/3 - cup soy milk, or almond milk

3 - tbsp barley grass

1- tbsp  crushed pumpkin seeds

1 - tsp ginko powder. optional

1-2 - tbsp honey to taste

Blend until smooth and drink to your health. My January advice to you is take care of yourself . Get enough rest and when the weather permits take a walk in a park.

Till next time ...

Jayne
